2010 Season Review

Fished 33 times this year, skunked (no Bluefish or Bass) 13 times, 4 out of the first 5x out this year I was skunked, so after that initial slump I was skunked 9 out of 28 times. First fish, a Striper, was caught on May 9th on a Chartreuse Teaser. Largest Bass this year was 35 inches. Caught two, one on a rubber teaser, the other on a 14” Hogy. This is the first year I caught more Stripers than Blues (by more than a 2:1 margin)
Breakdown on what Stripers were caught on
Rubber teasers 30%
Feathered teasers 20% (most on Chartreuse color)
Poppers 20% (most on Polaris style)
The rest were caught on 14” Hogys, Metal lips, Red Fins, North Bar Bottle plug, Red/white Mag Darter and Vision sand eel teaser.
Not One striper was caught on metal this year. Never got to fish any rough water where I could drag an Ava over a sand bar. Weather was too nice. Kept One bass this year for the table. Also caught around 20 Fluke, a couple of sea robins and Stargazers and some shad during the fall. As for Blues, never found a concentration of them. Each of the last three years I would have gotten into a 20 Bluefish morning, this year not even close.

2011 Fishing Review

Fished 40 times this year, skunked (no Bluefish or Bass) 13 times total, first 4 times out this year was skunked, so after that initial slump I was skunked 9 out of 36 times. First Striper, was caught on May 8th on a Chartreuse Teaser. Largest Bass this year was 36 inches on a Super Strike Green Popper. Caught 4x more Blues than last year, nothing bigger than 5 pounds.

Was a good year, last trip was December 11th.

2012 Fishing Review

Fished 45 times this year, skunked (no Bluefish or Bass) 17 times, from October 14th -November 17th (after hurricane Sandy came through I fished 6 times and caught nothing. That was the worst streak I remember for a long time. First fish, a Striper, was caught on March 18th on a Chartreuse Teaser.
This is the first year I caught more Blues than Stripers by a 5:1 margin. Had a few outings where I had 30 or more blues. Also caught a few gators this year. A nice 35” one on a BM Danny at 1:30 AM bayside was a great fight. Last Blue of the year was the Sunday Sandy started pounding Jersey. At 3:45 AM at the False Rip at the Hook, all alone, a 32” Gator hit an Afterhours Danny. I think that may be the last shore caught fish at the Hook in 2012. I left the park at 5:15 that morning and the park closed at 5:00.
Breakdown on what Stripers were caught on
Rubber teasers 12%
Feathered teasers 25% (most on Chartreuse color)
Plastic swimmers 10% (mostly Mambo Minnow)
The rest were caught on 14” Hogys, Metal lips, Mag Darter and assorted poppers.
Caught 5 Striped Bass larger than 28 inches this year (all released), largest 36 inches.
Also caught one Weakfish on a Choopy Darter.
Picked up a few Rays (35-40 lbs.), 10 Fluke, a few Sea Robins and a shad.
Was a very good year until Sandy hit.

2013 Season Review

Fished 24 times this year, skunked (no Bluefish, Fluke or Bass) 3 times. Season was cut short late August with my shoulder pain. Ended up with rotator cuff surgery on October 24th, 6 weeks in a sling, targeting April 2014 my first cast ocean side.

2013 was my best season as far as beating the skunk, I was able to catch a fish most trips. I had great fun catching short bass and blues ocean side this July/August, something new for me. Got into some Gators bayside that was great fun.

Breakdown on what Stripers were caught on
Rubber teasers 10%
Feathered teasers 35% (most on Chartreuse color)
Loaded 5 1/2″ Red Fin 15%
White 10″ Hogy 10%
The rest were caught on Bernzy Howdy, SP Minnow, Panther Martin Shads and Big Don metal lips.
Released all Striped Bass this year, largest was 34 inches.
Was a very good year until my shoulder was wrecked.
2014 Season Review

Fished 39 times this year, skunked (no Bluefish, Fluke or Bass) 13 times. So 1 out of every 3 trips I was skunked, much more than last year. 6 out of the first 11 trips were skunks, then from 9/28-11/4 I had 6 out of 8 skunks. So in those 2 periods (19 trips, there were 12 skunks. Part of that was learning new water for me on Long Island. Overall it was close to my best year fishing as far as  fun …which is what its all about. Fished Robert Moses and Montauk a bunch of times. Montauk is UNREAL. Its surf fishing heaven. So my biggest bass this year was around 36 inches on a Superstrike Darter and I also caught some Gators around that 35 inch area ocean side.

Breakdown on what Stripers were caught on
Bernzy yellow Howdy 18%
Purple 4 1/2″ Silent Assassin 10%,  another 8% on the mid size purple one
Loaded 5 1/2″ and 7 1/2″ Red Fin 18%
Jigman Jigmaster (spook) and winch spook a10%, 5% to RM floating needle
The rest were caught on SP minnow, bucktail, SS darter, Surf Assylum Flat Guide Needle, black Sluggo and a couple metal lip plugs.
Kept only 1 32 inch bass that had swallowed a plug and was bleeding badly, all others released.

2015 Season Review

My fishing in 2015 was my most enjoyable so far….
I fished a couple Long Island sound areas for the first time, a couple bass and a blue, so not a lot of action there. Jersey shore for a coupe trips, a few short bass there. My efforts were concentrated on Central South Shore of Long Island and out at Montauk.
I fished 38 times this year and was skunked 9 times, my first 2 trips (LI Sound), 2 back to back trips the end of September and 2 of the last 3 trips. My first trip of the year was April 26th and the last November 29th.
I caught more bass in 2015 than any year, blues not as many, but almost all were over 22 inches.
As for the bass, 14 where keeper size and I caught my largest bass (not my longest) of 40 inches with a nice girth. Kept only 1 Bass that swallowed a Rubber Shad.

Had a solid 17 bass night/morning on a great trip with Kevin when we found a real nice bite for a few hours.
The next trip I caught 7 bass, including a 32, 36 and 40 inch bass and lost a bigger one.

Last fish of the year was a bass on a Super Strike Black/Gold Darter

Here is what I caught my bass on
15 % on Super Strike Darters, Black/Gold caught the most (all in the dark)
10% on RM Smith Waverer
8% on Bucktails, Jecks mostly
8% on 7” Pearl Tsunami Shad
7% on Super Strike Popper
5% on Super Strike Bottles
5% on Big Fisher’s Darter, this included my largest bass and another that seemed bigger that got off

The rest were made up of Red fins, Bombers, HH Side Winder, a couple on a teaser (hardly fished a teaser this year), Orca, Jigman and Bernzy spooks, Larrys needle and Saltys needles (both Olive), Tsumani Eel, Mambo Minnow, North Bar Bottle……..

I mixed it up and had fun throwing all the different plugs. And I believe I learned a lot this year… will see next year.

2016 Season Review

A solid year of Surf Fishing. April 17to December 4th. Started off with 4 trips without a fish and then caught a Bass and 3 blues.Over the next 28 trips there would only be 2 skunk trips.  Then 2 out of my last 3 trips were skunks. Overall I fished 40 times and was skunked 8 times. Not as many bass as last year, but lager ones, 20 that were 28 inches or more plus my personal best 43 inch bass.  And this year had more blues than last year. So 2 trips to Jersey, others were Montauk and Robert Moses with a couple to Sunken Meadows,

So for Striped Bass:

10% on Loki Black Skinny Minnie

10% on Super Strike 3 oz yellow/white popper

10% on 3 oz bucktail with Fat Cow strip

8% on Big Fish Blitz Seeker

8% on Super Strike Darter

Linesider small olive darter and Goo Goo Man chartreuse/white bottle each had 6%

Others that caught a couple bass were Big Fischer Mega Darter, Super Strike 1 ¾ ox black/yellow needle, Musso mullet Vee Waker and Coltsniper Jerkbait painted Black

A good year with larger Bass and a good amount of Blues
